Villa del Balbianello Wedding Videographer, Lake Como

Villa del Balbianello sits on a cypress-covered promontory, the Punta di Lavedo, on the western shore of Lake Como just outside Lenno. It is probably the most photographed property on the lake. We film here regularly, for ceremonies, portrait walks and private events along the promontory, and it's one of the venues couples ask us the most practical questions about. It belongs to FAI (the Italian National Trust) and runs on genuinely strict rules, so we put together what we've learned firsthand alongside FAI's own published information.

History and why it's iconic on film

The villa was built in the late 18th century by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, who in 1787 also bought neighboring Villa Balbiano, the estate Tolomeo Gallio had acquired almost two centuries earlier. Its last private owner was Count Guido Monzino, the explorer who led the first Italian expedition to summit Everest, and the villa still holds his collection of travel memorabilia. Today FAI owns and preserves it, opens it to the public most days of the year, and allows a limited number of private events, including weddings.

Its film history is what most people recognize. George Lucas chose the terrace above the lake, by the Loggia Durini, as the setting for the secret wedding of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode II, Attack of the Clones, where it doubled as the planet Naboo. In 2006 the villa appeared again in Casino Royale, playing the Lake Como hospital where James Bond recovers after the poker game in Montenegro. Few wedding venues can say a couple will exchange vows on the same loggia where a fictional one already happened on screen.

FAI rules that affect your wedding

Because Villa del Balbianello is a protected heritage property, weddings here run on a tighter schedule than at privately owned villas. It's worth planning your videography coverage around that rather than being surprised by it on the day.

• Ceremony types: FAI offers civil or symbolic wedding ceremonies. For a legally binding civil ceremony, a representative of the local town hall comes to the villa to officiate.
• Timing: according to the rental fee schedule published by the planners at Italian Lakes Wedding, bookings come in fixed formats: a ceremony of up to 2 hours on site, a ceremony with aperitivo of up to 3 hours, or ceremony, aperitivo and dinner of up to 6 hours. Small ceremonies can take place while the villa is open to visitors. Larger groups (over about 50 guests) and any longer event need the villa closed to the public, which means a Monday or Wednesday, or any day after the 6 pm closing. FAI's own rental page doesn't list durations, so confirm your exact slot with FAI.
• Capacity by space, as listed by FAI: Loggia Durini 60-100 people, the lakeside terrace up to 130, Loggia Segrè 75-100, Terrazzo Canfora up to 100 for a buffet. The exact number depends on layout, so treat these as upper limits.
• Receptions: FAI hosts aperitivos and dinners as well as ceremonies, but there are no rooms to sleep in and the villa can't be rented for consecutive days. Everything, from chairs to catering, comes in and goes out the same day.
• Photo and video: professional photo shoots at the villa are paid and must be booked in advance with FAI. Flash is restricted in parts of the interior, and there are positioning rules for photo and video teams during the ceremony.
• Weather: the terraces are outdoors. If you want dinner or a larger ceremony outside and the forecast turns, planners usually need a marquee, which adds real cost, so ask about the rain plan when you book.

The price difference is between open and closed slots, not between particular weekdays. In the 2025 schedule published by Italian Lakes Wedding, a two-hour ceremony for up to 30 guests was listed at €4,400 with the villa open to visitors and €9,200 with it closed to the public, plus 22% VAT, and the same planners note that Saturdays carry a premium in the 2026-2027 fees. Treat these as indications and ask FAI for the current rates. What the closed-slot fee buys you is grounds with no day visitors in the background.

Drones need separate thought. Italian drone rules (registration with ENAC's d-flight system and no flying over gatherings of people) apply everywhere, and on top of that you need FAI's permission for the property. Ask your planner to confirm before you count on aerial shots.

Legal or symbolic ceremony

A civil ceremony here is legally binding, but for couples marrying from abroad it comes with paperwork. You'll typically need a Nulla Osta (the UK calls it a certificate of no impediment) from your country's consulate or embassy, plus a declaration of intent at the town hall a few days before the wedding, and an interpreter if either of you doesn't speak Italian. The exact documents depend on your nationality, and the process takes weeks, so start several months ahead.

Many couples choose a symbolic ceremony at Balbianello instead and sign the legal papers at home. The day then carries no bureaucratic risk, and the officiant can be anyone you like, which often makes the vows more personal on film.

Opening hours and getting there

At the time of writing, FAI opens the villa to the public from March to January, every day except Monday and Wednesday, from 10 am to 6 pm (5 pm from November, with reduced dates in winter). The villa is about 38 km from Como, roughly an hour by car along the western shore, and a little over an hour and a half from Milan Malpensa airport, depending on traffic on the lake road.

Visitors reach the villa in two ways:

• On foot from Lenno: a 1 km uphill path, partly gravel, that takes about 25 minutes, or a longer 2.5 km trail of around 45 minutes. FAI recommends proper shoes, and neither route suits strollers, wheelchairs or wedding heels.
• By taxi boat from Lido di Lenno: a paid, booking-only service. For weddings, planners arrange private boats for the couple and guests, and boats are the standard way in and out for events.

There is no guest parking at the villa itself. Guests usually park or are dropped in Lenno and board boats from there. Public ferries run by Navigazione Laghi stop at Lenno, but in the 2026 summer timetable the last evening boats leave Lenno around 8 pm, so an evening wedding depends on private boats or cars for the ride home.

What it looks like on film

The Loggia Durini is the obvious centerpiece and films almost exactly as it looks on screen: cypress trees framing the lake behind the couple, stone columns catching soft, indirect light through most of the day, since the promontory looks out across the water in several directions. Because ceremony time here is short and tightly scheduled, we plan coverage in advance rather than improvising on site. We need to know exactly where the officiant stands, where guests are seated, and where a second camera can move without crossing a restricted sightline.

Light is worth planning around. Balbianello sits on the western shore, so the mountains behind Lenno block the sun well before the official sunset time. The terraces then fall into soft open shade while the opposite shore stays lit. That's flattering for faces, but if you want warm, direct sun on the ceremony, book an earlier slot. For the evening glow over the water, plan portraits for the last half hour of your slot.

Access becomes part of the story. The arrival sequence, whether by boat around the promontory or along the path from Lenno past cypresses and gravel paths, is often as strong visually as the ceremony itself. That's the sequence we built our coverage around during a recent visit with Navdeep and Amiraj. The walk or boat ride in is easy to miss if you don't plan for it, and it's usually our first priority once we know a couple's arrival route.

Planning your ceremony window

FAI issues a limited number of wedding slots, and once your window (2, 3 or 6 hours, depending on the format) is confirmed it's fixed. The most useful thing we tell couples booking Balbianello is to lock the ceremony time with FAI before finalizing anything else. Hair and makeup, guest transport and the reception venue afterward all get scheduled around that slot, not the other way around. We plan our coverage the same way: knowing the exact minute the ceremony starts means we're in position for the boat or foot arrival with time to spare.

If your guest list is small, you'll have a choice: a cheaper ceremony while the villa is open, with visitors around, or an exclusive slot on a Monday, a Wednesday or after 6 pm. The exclusive fee is higher, but an empty promontory changes how the arrival looks on film more than almost anything else we can control.

The most requested months are May, June and September. Late spring and early autumn usually bring clearer air and milder temperatures than July and August, which can be hazy and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. For a summer date, prime slots go a year or more ahead, so couples planning for 2027 should contact FAI now.

A sample timeline

This is an example of an evening booking on a public day, after the 6 pm closing, in June. Your times will depend on the slot FAI gives you.

1. 6:00 pm: guests gather at the Lenno lakefront and board private boats. We film the boarding and the crossing.
2. 6:30 pm: the couple arrives by boat. Last guests seated at the Loggia Durini.
3. 6:45 pm: ceremony, about 30 minutes.
4. 7:15 pm: aperitivo on the lakeside terrace. Family photos and a short portrait walk through the gardens.
5. 8:45 pm: boats leave for dinner at a hotel or villa elsewhere on the lake, or dinner continues on site if you've booked a longer event.

FAQ

Is Villa del Balbianello the same as Villa Balbiano?

No. They're two different properties close to each other on the same shore. Villa del Balbianello is a FAI heritage site with strict, single-day event rules. Villa Balbiano is a privately owned estate rented for exclusive use over several days, including full dinner receptions and overnight stays.

How much time do we actually get for the ceremony?

Planners who publish the FAI fee schedule list three formats: a ceremony of up to 2 hours on site, ceremony and aperitivo of up to 3 hours, and ceremony, aperitivo and dinner of up to 6 hours. Events with dinner always take place with the villa closed to the public. Ask FAI to confirm the current formats.

Can we have a legally binding wedding at Villa del Balbianello?
